A Lifetime of Crossings

Hey, folks! Meet Luis Decubas, or as all the kids around here lovingly call him, “Mr. Lui.” Can you believe that he’s been keeping our kids safe for a whopping 22 years? That’s right, he’s not just a crossing guard; he’s like a superhero without the cape. Rain or shine, Mr. Lui is out there making sure our little ones get to school and back home safe and sound. And let me tell you, he’s more than just a friendly face at the crosswalk – he’s a part of the family. So here’s to Mr. Lui, the man who’s been looking out for our kids like no other for over two decades!

Let’s dive into the personal motivations behind Luis Decubas’s remarkable journey as a crossing guard and volunteer for Safe 2 School. When asked, ‘What inspired you to become a crossing guard and volunteer for Safe 2 School?” he replied, “I just started because my daughters went to the schools and I wanted to keep the kids safe.”

As a father, Mr. Lui knew how crucial it was for kids to get to school safely. When he watched his own daughters walk through the busy streets every day, he felt just like any other parent – worried sick about their safety. His fatherly care and burning desire to do some good for the neighborhood kids were what inspired him to become a crossing guard. He didn’t want any child to face danger on their way to school, just like he wouldn’t want that for his own kids. So, he decided to step up and help out.

For Mr. Lui, the best part of his job is seeing those kids light up with big smiles on their faces. It warms his heart and makes his day knowing that he can bring a little happiness to their lives. Mr. Lui suggests that volunteering can be an excellent opportunity to meet new people and become a part of the community. He also emphasized the importance of the role itself, pointing out that schools really need crossing guards to help keep the kids safe. It is a responsibility that comes with a lot of satisfaction because you know that you are making a positive impact on the community, especially when it comes to the safety of children.

To him, being a crossing guard has not only allowed him to contribute to the safety of children, but has also had a positive impact on his own life. People in the community often express their gratitude by thanking him and even giving him presents and gifts throughout the year.
